A lot of people wonder whether it is possible for one to get pregnant on their periods. Of course, the chances of you getting pregnant on your period are quite low, but they are not zero, as there is a very slim chance that you can actually get pregnant on your period. If for some reason the spermatozoa happen to find your ovum and fuses, then naturally, pregnancy is bound to take place. Since there are situations wherein the ovum can be sited at the fallopian tube area, then there is a probability for you to get pregnant on your period.
Extensive research that has been conducted on the reproductive system of humans has proven that there is no point in the active reproductive cycle of a woman that she has a zero chance of being fertilized. Of course, during the menstrual cycle, there are days with chances of conception greater than others, but it is never zero at any time. You might want to read a little bit further to get advice and insight on whether it is possible for you to get pregnant when you are on your period or on the pill.
A normal menstrual cycle of a woman takes twenty eight days to attain completion. This length is just an average, since it varies from woman to woman. For some women, it can be as short as twenty one days, and for others, as long as thirty five days. In fact, studies have shown that only thirty percent of the women studied actually had a cycle that lasted twenty eight days exactly. However, for whatever number of menstrual cycles, the woman is expected to ovulate midway in the cycle. Here's a little illustration: for a woman who has a thirty days menstruation cycle, it is very likely that she would ovulate at fifteen days into the cycle. If you are not quite sure what ovulation means, well then, here it is: ovulation is the process of the womb extracting an egg from the ovary of the woman. The process through which this discharge comes about is through the rupturing of the ovarian follicles. When it is discharged, the egg is then moved on to the fallopian tube where it stays for some time, waiting for about a day and a half to get fertilized by the sperm. Fertilization occurs only when the sperm fuses with the ovum. Immediately after the fertilization process takes place, pregnancy kicks off.
However, in a situation where the ovum does not get fertilized, it is shed off of the body along with the lining of the uterus, and this causes the bleeding that is common in menstruation. This bleeding occurs for duration of about three to five days. This process would continue, until pregnancy takes place via fertilization.
So, what are the chances of getting pregnant during your period?
If you have followed the above text, then you would have understood that fertilization would occur more during the fourteenth day in a twenty eight day menstrual cycle. Therefore, you can expect your peak periods to be around the 12th to 16th day range of your menstrual. In such a case, the probability of your getting pregnant is now dependent on the probability of your being fertilized, which is dependent on whether there is sperm or ovum available for fusion. The chance of such a fusion is very high at the mid period of your menstrual cycle. It gets lower on other days, as there is a reduction of the probability of an ovum occurring in the fallopian tube. However, if by chance there is an ovum in the fallopian tube, and a sperm meets it, it is very easy for fertilization to take place.
Here is a scenario when such a situation could occur:
Usually, when you are in your period, an ovum is already developing to replace the first one that is going through. If you have a very short cycle, of about twenty one days, there is a higher chance of you ovulating after another couple of days. Since it is possible for a sperm cell to be active still in the womb of a woman for a couple of days, there is no ruling out the probability of fertilization in such a case.
In another scenario, if you are a long-period bleeder, you could be bleeding even when you are through with your period, and in some cases, even during your ovulation period. Therefore, it is quite possible for you to think you are in your period and have sex, when you are actually still ovulating
Some people might also experience conceptions in their periods if they suffer from irregular periods. If you have an irregular period, then it is possible for your ovulation to occur very close to your period and that confirms that it is possible to get pregnant on your period.
